HISTORY

  • 1982-1984 Los Angeles choreographer community organizes serious campaign for formal contract recognition.

  • Jun 1984 The Director's Guild of America (DGA) agrees to take choreographer issues to table during negotiations with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. AMPTP denies choreographers recognition.

  • Dec 1990-Nov 1991 SSDC begins discussing the lack of choreographer representation in media. The SSDC hosts a meeting in Los Angeles for choreographers that results in solidarity for union representation. 

  • Sept 1991 Work begins on terms of a minimum basic agreement for employment in media and live concert venues.

  • First concept of minimum basic agreement presented to the LA community.

  • Nov 1991-1992 Contract creation and modification by LA core committee - named the MCC - committee meets weekly.

  • Mar 1992 Letter to Academy regarding omission of choreographers from credit crawl on "Oscar's Greatest Moments" video.

  • April 1992 Proposal that SSDC By-Laws change to permit SSDC representation of media choreographers by Executive Board.

  • May 1992 Follow-up letter to Academy regarding credit on "Oscar's Greatest Moments" sent with 160 choreographers' signatures.

  • Jun 1992 By-Laws referendum passed

  • Jul 1992 Executive Board establishes a media choreographer policy, including a Ways and Means Committee to advise on implementing media choreographer representation. 

  • Oct 1992 Press conference at Hollywood Roosevelt to discuss property rights and "Oscar's Greatest Moments" Video.

  • Nov 1992 Draft of Minimum Basic Agreement submitted to LA area media choreographers.

  • Nov 1992 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences agrees to credit choreographers on future releases.

  • Feb 1993 SSDC's MCC contract is effective, published and distributed to members.

  • Apr 1993 First MCC contracts filled for Michael Peters as Choreographer and Eartha Robinson as Assistant for "Essence Awards" telecast.

  • Nov 1993 First MCC Feature Film Contract Filed with SSDC for Peggy Holmes on "I Love Trouble".

  • 1993 33 MCC contracts filed.

  • Jun 1994 Letter sent to Producers and MGM-Turner Home Entertainment protesting the absence of any choreographer's credit in feature release "That's Entertainment III".

  • Jun 1994 NYC choreographers rally in protest outside of Ziegfield Theater showing film.

  • July 1994 LA MCC community lobbies the Academy of Television Arts and Science to reinstate nominees for the Choreography category in its Prime Time Awards division.

  • Sept 1994 MCC and LA Dance Foundation co-produce the "1ST ANNUAL LA DANCE AWARDS" honoring Outstanding Choreographic Achievement in Feature Film. Also, honorary Awards are given in Lifetime Achievement and Educator categories. 

  • Nov 1994 SSDC call strike and organizes picket against Radio City Music Hall Productions for lack of SSDC contract for director/choreographer of annual Christmas Show. 

  • 1994 42 MCC contracts filed.

  • Jan 1995 MGM-Turner Home Entertainment has released a laserdisc version of "That's Entertainment III" with brochure listing all choreographers responsible for work found in the movie.

  • 1995 MCC contract divided into Live Non-Theatrical and Media to distinguish between media and live venues.

  • Oct 1995 MCC and LADF co-produce "2ND ANNUAL LA DANCE AWARDS" featuring the "Fosse" Award in Feature Film and Commercial categories. Lifetime Achievement, Educator and Alternative Dance Honors are awarded. 

  • 1995 53 MCC contracts filed.

  • 1995 MCC tops $1 million in fees.
